If your vehicles travel in and through London then you should be aware of the new campaign #EnginesOff, which is led by Idling Action. This is to encourage vehicles to switch off their engines whilst stationary, reducing the amount of toxic air within London.
The Idling Action Protect has so far seen 30 local authorities and the City of London Corporation join forces to cut emissions and reduce the high number of deaths that occur each year, due to these deadly emissions.
The Idling Action Project has been running since 2016. Now in its fourth phase, it is jointly led by the City of London Corporation and the London Borough of Camden. The campaign is funded by the Mayor’s Air Quality Fund.
Although idling currently is already an offence, under Section 42 of the Road Traffic Act (1988), drivers still commit offences every day. The driver can face a fine of £20, as a minimum and this can rise to £80 in some areas.
Keith Bottomley, chairman of the City of London Corporation’s Environmental Services Committee, said: ‘64,000 people die prematurely every year in the UK from breathing polluted air.
‘Switching off the engine when your vehicle is parked is more important now than ever before.
‘As we learn more about the harmful effects of COVID-19 on the lungs, we are making a particular plea to London’s businesses to play their part in ridding the capital of toxic air and saving lives.’ (1)
